Well while Nanna was visiting we had planned to go away for two nights somewhere. For Jaron and I this would be our first time away from not just the kids, but a first since our Honeymoon. Sure we have taken trips, but they always include some kind of family visit. We could not decide where we wanted to go and it actually created a lot of stress. We really didn't want to spend time at a beach here in North Carolina, because well we are going to be on an island for five years. Don't get me wrong I am happy about going to Hawaii, but I wanted experience something we haven't experienced together before. After a week of disagreeing Jaron found a trip to Boston with flight and hotel for a reasonable price. He had been to Boston the week before for work and thought it would be fun to go together. So Wednesday night he booked the tickets for us to fly out at 5:30am the next morning. Needless to say we had to figure out transportation, because we only have one car and couldn't leave Nanna without a car. Plus, we couldn't her to leave our house at 3:30am )meaning she would have to wake the kids) and drive two hours before day break. So our good friend Thomas drove up from Cherry Point (the airport is near there) and stayed with us so he could drive us to the airport. THANK YOU THOMAS!!!!
Our flights went off without a hitch. Compared to the last three years where I have flown mostly by myself with the kids. So not having the kids was so nice, to just be able to sit back and read a book. After arriving to the airport we caught the "L" to our hotel. Our hotel was literally in the middle of Boston. We were able to walk to everywhere and anywhere. Oh yeah, the hotel was NICE!!! We were able to check our bag there at the hotel so we could walk around Boston until our room was ready. We ate a great lunch and walked through the parks and gardens, then headed back to the hotel. We were pretty tired and needed a little rest before going out again. After a couple hour nap we got up and went out to dinner. We went to Italian district where there is something like 104 Italian restaurants. It smelt so good!!! We ended up at the Cantina and had a wonderful relaxing dinner. There is nothing like being able to eat your food in peace and actually getting to enjoy and taste your food. Usually with the kids we eat as fast as we can so we can out quickly and not make a scene. Ha! After dinner we went to a local bar had some drinks then headed back to the hotel.
The next day we headed out to the aquarium and spent a couple of hours walking around. Jaron hasn't been able to make it to any of the aquarium visits with the kids, so I think he felt like he was missing out. Jaron was really cute while at the aquarium. He wanted to take pictures and videos for the kids to see when we got home. Though we were away from the kiddos they were always right there with us. Another kinda funny thing is the Bostonians even make fun of the way they talk. There was a sign a cab for the aquarium andthe aquarium itself that read SHAHHHKS!!! There was also convenient store on the corner that read "Connah Store". Okay, so after the aquarium we walked around to find somewhere to eat. We sat at a restaurant outside and had a really good lunch. Our appetizer was enough to feed six people. It was a crab, artichoke, shrimp dip, with pita wedges. We were barely able to eat our food when it came. After lunch we just walked around and did a little site seeing and well got a little lost in route to the Museum of Science. At the museum we caught a "Duck Tour", which I may add was expensive but worth it. Your ride in WWII amphibious assault vehicle that takes you around town while the driver commentates. Then the vehicle takes you for a dip into the river for a different view of Boston. It was nice to have someone tell us about some of the history with a comical flare. After a long day of walking and being out and about we went back to the hotel to rest and shower up for dinner. So we hit the street looking for somewhere to eat. We ended up at this high end restaurant because their menu sounded so yummy and different. This meal was by far the most expensive meal Jaron and I have ever eaten, but my goodness it was YUMMY!!! We for sure can't find food that good here in old j-ville, NC. We were going go out for some drinks, but decided to head back to the hotel and just enjoy being able to relax.
We caught our flight the next day with no problems and were picked up at the airport by Nanna. It was great to see the kids again, even though they pretty much cried and were unruly on the ride back home. I might add my kids are usually good while in the car, but I guess after being gone a few days they felt like needed to make up for lost time. Ha!
Our getaway was by far a success. We were able to just talk about all kinds of things, eat yummy food, relax, and getaway from the military environment and the BUGS of NC. We love our life with the kids and the life we have with the military, but time is needed to be away from it all. I would say those two and half days will stick with Jaron and I for a life time. There is nothing like getting away from the daily grind and just be whatever it is you want to be.
So you may ask how did the kids do while we were gone. Nanna reported they did pretty great. Elijah pretended to talk on the phone, saying, "Where are you Mom?". By the third morning Elijah got upset not to find Jaron and I are in our bed and began to cry.. Ava didn't seem to miss us much. I guess as long as you feed her and read to her she is good to go.
If you click on this picture you can see the sign at the stop of the aquarium that reads "SHAHHHKS".
Funny little penguin. He was sitting my himself and just fluffing his feathers from time to time. Then the sprinklers came on and just sat there in the water.
